Perimenopause

Are you experiencing so many menopause symptoms yet still having your menstrual periods? Well, you might be on your perimenopause stage. Perimenopause refers to the years both before and after the last period ever, when many women find that they undergo symptoms of hormonal change and fluctuation, such as hot flashes, mood changes, insomnia, depression, etc.

When you are in your perimenopause year(s) you experience menopausal symptoms at an earlier than normal age, but still ovulating and have your hormone levels tested at normal levels. This is because your hormone levels are actually fluctuating.

You are typically still ovulating during this stage although you many begin having anovulatory periods. And often if you get blood tests of your hormones in this period, you’ll be told all is well but you still feel bad.

Moreover, the average duration of perimenopause period is six years, and can appear in women from 35 to 50 years of age. But actually this has not been a stage in a woman’s life that is much talked about, in fact, often when people talk about menopause they are really talking about perimenopause, since this is the time when they will first begin having hot flashes, night sweats, changes in menstrual period, mood swings, and the like.
Possible Risk Factors that May Affect the Onset of Perimenopause

There are some factors that may affect the onset of perimenopause. Environmental influences may actually change the ovarian aging process. Smoking advances the age of menopause by about 2 years, and thus affecting the perimenopause stage of a woman. Also, about 28 recent researches propose that high levels of galactose consumption may do the same.

Ovarian surgery, pelvic endometriosis and adhesions appear to be associated with poor ovarian stimulation are also risk factors for early perimenopause which will currently lead to menopause. However, familial and genetic factors appear to be the most predictive at present.
Common Perimenopause Signs

Some women have symptoms during their perimenopause that can be very difficult to deal with. These symptoms include:

  • Problems in concentration and memory
  • Menstrual cycles become shorter, longer, or unpredictable
  • Flow becomes heavier or lighter
  • Mood changes
  • Low blood sugar
  • Sleep problems
  • Fatigue several days before menstruation
  • Weight gain
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Headaches
  • Dry and/or itchy vulva, clitoris

Ways on Easing the Perimenopause Signs

Depending upon the level of your symptoms, your doctor may recommend going on low-dose birth control pills or even low-dose Hormone Replacement Therapy. These medications usually are intended to arbitrate symptoms, but not as a literal hormone replacement to fend off the effects of low estrogen at an earlier than normal age.

Proper diet and healthy way of living can also help in easing perimenopause signs. Also, talking with your health care specialist if you feel depressed or have any other questions about how to relieve your symptoms would also be good for you.
